Walking for weight loss is a great way to keep fit and lose weight at the same time. If you thought it was difficult to lose weight, maintaining that ‘lost’ weight is even more difficult. So many of my friends were able to lose weight successfully, only to regain it all back after a few weeks. It is not the fault of the diet program they followed. They gained weight for two reasons: they got back to their old lifestyle habits like eating junk food, and they forgot all about exercising!

People have a misconception that once they lose weight successfully, they think that they won’t get it back, no matter what they do! This is simply not the case! Even after you’ve lost weight successfully, you will have to follow the same diet and exercise routine to maintain your body at that weight! I can understand if you don’t want to go back to your monotonous gym routine, but there’s nothing stopping you doing some walking.

Below are three walking tips to help you get started!

1. Consult with your doctor: Before you start walking on a regular basis, I would recommend you visit your doctor first. Your doctor will be able to structure a regular walking schedule for you based on your current health situation. They might also recommend some other activities for you besides walking.

2. Always track your steps: Simply walking without counting your steps is not enough: I would advise that you use a tool called pedometer which actually tracks the amount of steps you walk. They are very useful and relatively inexpensive. A good starting point for beginners is to aim for between 5,000 and 10,000 steps per day, EVERY day. Start slowly and build up as the days and weeks go by. If you remain totally committed to your walking regime you’ll soon see how much better you feel, within days!

3. Wear the right clothes: For walking to be an enjoyable experience, always wear loose-fitting clothes that allow free movement of limbs. Don’t wear anything tight-fitting that makes you feel uncomfortable! Also be sure to put on soft training shoes that make your feet feel comfortable. If you wear the wrong footwear you’ll soon lose interest in walking and have feet full of blisters.

You have been warned!
